The main beat effect has been sampled from the original and overall the tune has been beefed up with synthesizers for more atmosphere.

This tune should be played loud! |

I named this remix Boulder Trash since that describes the sound pretty well. It was a challenge to get all the notes of Boulder Dash's two voices right back then. Yeah, there're only two voices in the original Boulder Dash.
LaLa's pick of the day - August 1st 2000 (from the C64rmx mailing list)
If you ever thought about doing an ultimate cover of Boulder Dash - stop! It just got done by David Filskov!
The cover starts out with the original SID [actually it's Musicline Editor all the way, ed.] then cuts over to the "actual cover", but this cutover feels as smooth as a baby's ass. To make sure that this short, simple, repeating tune does not get boring, David introduces drums later on and awesome filtered-overdriven sounds. The whole thing then switches into total overdrive, then ends with a big splash. Fantastic! I find myself listening to this awesome cover over and over. (Although I wish that the middle part with the drums lasted longer.)
Puffy64 - August 8th 2000
Perfect! - I loved the game. And for the first time I found some remixer who has used the synth in a rocky way. distortion... That's what my ears need. But the song doesn't last long enough ;( (Sure, the original-tune isn't much longer...)
Keep on remixin' stuff this way and you are on the way to my top5 remixers...That's a very fine tune!
Chris Abbott - January 23rd 2003
It starts with SID... so far so good, it's always a treat. Then the tune is played by erratically filtered and distorted synths, and a pretty apocalyptic breakbeat. Though intriguing, the character of Boulderdash was always conveyed for me by echo and space, mirroring the cavernous spaces in the game. My initial exposure to this music was on the Atari, where it's even more echoey, so this cover just doesn't quite fit into my mental map. It's accurate notewise, but the tune just didn't need this treatment. Towards the end if gets so distorted it's nasty: that's no way to reward people for their endurance is it? Clever but pointless. Brave experiment, but a bit of a travesty.

I started trying to just copy the original as I remembered it but decided to make some small changes.
Jason 'Kenz' MacKenzie - August 2000 (from the C64rmx mailing list)
I've actually been in contact with David about this one. I told him it sounded similar in style to GameBoy music! (Not a criticism, I like GameBoy stuff!) David told me it was actually done on the Amiga (using real chip sounds, not samples). This is an interesting mix which does actually grow on you after a while. :)
LaLa - August 3rd 2000 (from the C64rmx mailing list)
Starts out okay - but then it just remains okay. I expected more from David who gave us such great remixes before. Oh, no, there are even leftover arpeggios here and there! Starting at 1:11 I like that "whining" sound in the left channel. But this is the only highlight in this tune, the rest is just average stuff. Too bad, because I had high expectations for David.
Chris Abbott - January 1st 2003 (from remix64.com)
Unsubtle and unsatisfying version of this seminal Galway tune: the burbles lack the immediacy of the SID, and somehow the wide-open space and lightness of Galway's original is gone. The occasional pleasant harmonies (for instance, on Galway's solo) don't make up for the loss of Galway-ness that's happened here. Was this all done on C64s? It might well have been, in which case: brave move, but why bother? The recording's quite punchy though, and it IS relatively accurate. OK version of Galway's classic.

I think this middelage kind of style tune works fine with my synth arrangement - a bit 80ies perhaps - Mike Oldfield'ish.
LaLa - May 19th 2000 (from the C64rmx mailing list)
Starts with a harpsicord-like sound - very fitting. Continues with nice drums and a choir. Too bad it's so short! (Kept it.)
Jason 'Kenz' MacKenzie - August 2000 (from the C64rmx mailing list)
Mmm! Short but sweet! Love the swirly backing.
This mix features a nice (and almost harpsichord-esque) lead with swirling synthy bits, thumpy bass and some light and airey chords. The pleasant tinkly ending is the icing on this particular tasty little cake.
Trond Ivar Hansen - March 8th 2001
This tune is still the best "jolly medieval" tune I've ever heard.
Probably the tune I'd choose if I were on a desolate island and had to choose only one tune to listen to while I were there :)
Chris Abbott - January 1st 2003 (from remix64.com)
Synth Firelord? Time has not been a friend to this version. The drums don't work, and it's become clear that this is an orchestral piece. As such, though you can hear the effort in terms of structure, all I hear is how it should have been. Which is unfair of me really, because there's not a lot else wrong with this. Worthwhile download.

Inspired by Jean-Michel Jarre's Concerts in China I made this tune sound like a live concert.
Sebastian Hartmann - February 17th 2000
I downloaded your One Man & His Droid-cover from the Triad homepage, and as I am hell of a sceptic if c64-tune-covers come up, I must must must tell you - your song is great! - cool sound. The game-feeling is not denied and that idea of doing it as an arena-like sound really rocks! (one minus is that it does not last for over 8 minutes but that is matter of technology, I guess :). I am lucky, there is (which I am convinced of) an alternative to "swallowing" the feeling of these songs by "putting" them into a very ugly dancefloor-pattern (making them sound too POPular is not very fair!).
Thanks! I'll surely buy your CD, if available. (extended versions expected =)
LaLa - May 19th 2000 (from the C64rmx mailing list)
Not bad, but I don't think it's punchy enough. It's not quite "there". (Kept it, though.)
Unknown - August 2000 (from the C64rmx mailing list)
Definitely the 'Jarre Live' mix!!
You get the screaming crowd and that bit of 'echo' to the piece which sounds concert-esque. A cool cover with some nice ideas in there (and clever percussion) - although the whole tune hasn't been covered. One for Jarre fans me thinks (and there's also what sounds like a small homage to Kraftwerk in there too!) Totally unique! (as Jarre might say!)
Chris Abbott - January 1st 2003 (from remix64.com)
From the very first bars, it's obvious what David is trying here: Magnetic Fields, played live. Considering the essential Fields-ness of this tune, it's an appropriate choice, and it's carried off with panache, though I wish some of the tune was restored (sometimes just the harmony plays). Crowd noises and SFX sustain the atmosphere, though this isn't a full length version. A very clever ending, too. Convincing! Well done, but I prefer my remixes sounding studio rather than live, but that's personal taste. Remixes like this are quite rare.
